Tavazzano and Montanaso thermoelectric power plant is built on an area of around 79 hectares in the Municipalities of Montanaso Lombardo and Tavazzano con Villavesco, in the province of Lodi from Milan.
The plant has an installed capacity of 1,170 MW and it consists of two CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) units:

• Unit 5 (790 MW), in operation since 2004, consists of two gas turbines and two heat recovery steam generators, connected with a steam turbine;

• Unit 6 (380 MW), in operation since 2005, consists of one gas turbine and one steam generator connected with the steam turbine.

The plant is close to important electricity consumption centres.

In 2000 the plant was one of the first industrial sites in Italy to obtain ISO 14001 environmental certification. It is also certified ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and it is included in the European EMAS Register.

The new project improves the efficiency of Tavazzano and Montanaso power plant and involves the construction of a new combined cycle unit of the latest generation (class H technology) that will flank the two existing units.
The new unit will have a net electric power of about 800 MW and an efficiency of over 62%.
Combined cycle operation will also lead to an improvement in environmental performance, with a further reduction in atmospheric emissions (both mass and specific) and no increase in the thermal impact on the Muzza Canal’s waters.

The project is in line with the objectives of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan regarding the decarbonisation and security of the national electricity system.

The Tavazzano new unit falls within the Capacity Market, a mechanism by which Terna procures generation capacity under long-term supply contracts awarded through competitive auctions.
